Comedian Natasha Muse is in the studio to talk with Dara and Yasmine about FOMO spending—shelling out cash for cool experiences you may not be able to afford. Those experiences may involve Instagrammable trips to the Amalfi Coast, boozy brunches with friends, meetups that require a car, or even artisanal beef jerky. We also brainstorm cheap ways to have a fun time and experience the joy of missing out (JOMO).

With this many funny femmes in one room saying things the British way, it does get a little goofy this week with a debate on iOS versus Android, a remix of the Jaws theme song, a discussion of how social media scrolling can turn into spending, and a heartfelt shoutout to PBS’ Arthur (and Ziggy Marley, natch).

Dara M Wilson:

(singing).

Dara M Wilson:

Hi I'm Dara M Wilson.

Yasmine Khan:

And I'm Yasmine Khan.

Dara M Wilson:

And this is Money Ha Ha.

Yasmine Khan:

The podcast with smart funny friends bring money talk out of the shame drawer and onto the table.

Dara M Wilson:

Each week, we discuss one of those money topics that pretty much everyone struggles with, but nobody feels comfortable talking about. And today we have a very special guest. She is a San Francisco comedian with a weekly show at Murphy's Pub called Night Life on Mars, mars, mars, mars. And her name is Natasha Muse.

Natasha Muse:

Hey everybody.

Dara M Wilson:

Hey Natasha thank you so much for being here.

Natasha Muse:

Thanks for having me.

Yasmine Khan:

I was just saying, I'm so excited to have you here because you are one of, you are probably my favorite San Francisco comedian.

Natasha Muse:

Oh that's so nice.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

Wow.

Yasmine Khan:

And true.

Natasha Muse:

Wow, wow.

Dara M Wilson:

Love it when it's both. Nice and true. And Natasha-

Yasmine Khan:

Don't tell anybody else.

Dara M Wilson:

Did my show, Amazonians, brought the house down. She was so amazing.

Natasha Muse:

That was a fun show.

Dara M Wilson:

I'm glad. Yeah. So we're bringing it together.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

This is an Amazonian's Reunion and you didn't even know.

Natasha Muse:

It's nice.

Yasmine Khan:

I did know because I went to the show. She also did my show, Unapologetic, last year, at the Lacard Bar, which was really fun.

Natasha Muse:

Oh right. Do you still do shows there?

Yasmine Khan:

No.

Natasha Muse:

All right. I'm glad I got in before it all went down.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I mean, we'll do more shows there. I'm just am not currently 'cause...

Dara M Wilson:

'Cause we're doing this.

Yasmine Khan:

Because we're doing this and it's so much fun.

Natasha Muse:

You're doing this. This is fun.

Dara M Wilson:

And then we just, we're beside ourselves and we can't have any more fun for the rest of the week. So this is all our fun, we just get overwhelmed. Like right now. How much fun is this?

Natasha Muse:

I'm excited to be here. When I did your show I was really sick, so I'm glad to be here healthy.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh. And you're feeling better now?

Natasha Muse:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Good. Very good.

Yasmine Khan:

You really brought it though. I mean, I could tell because I've seen you do a show before and I was like, "She's making it work", "She's doing this". And it was still real, the crowd loved it. It was amazing.

Natasha Muse:

All right, thanks.

Yasmine Khan:

You're a professional.

Natasha Muse:

I wasn't digging for more compliments, but now I see that that's what it seemed like.

Yasmine Khan:

It did not seem like that. It's just the thing I have to give.

Dara M Wilson:

That's Yasmine's generosity. Compliments. It's a good thing.

Yasmine Khan:

It's kind of like your generosity for hanging out with me.

Dara M Wilson:

I am so very, very gracious in the fact that I deigned to bless you with my presence outside of work and podcast hours. It's true. And you feed me wine in response.

Yasmine Khan:

I bribe her.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

I like that you used word deigned.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh, well, I tried. Once a week, slip it in there somehow.

Natasha Muse:

I accidentally used that in front of my little kids. And they were like, "What does that mean?" And I was like, "I don't really know how to explain it."

Dara M Wilson:

Hmm, it's like you want to feel fancy, but you're really saying something very simple. Deign. I deign to et cetera, et cetera.

Yasmine Khan:

It's like everything British. You want to say something fancy and a little bit snarky, so you say it the British way, like, "I can't be bothered to pick you up from school young lady."

Dara M Wilson:

Isn't that the, it's like, "I can't, I can't..." Oh I almost did an accent, but no I'm not, not gonna. I already embarrass myself too much on this show. But like arsed, "You can't be arsed." I lost confidence immediately after I started doing it. "I can't be arsed to do this thing." Is that more Irish? I'm jumping off this boat, I give up.

Natasha Muse:

I think I understand deign less well now, though.

Dara M Wilson:

Okay. Well we'll have our round of Dictionary after we wrap up today, so we can all feel good and leave confidently. Not doing weird Irish accents. Deal! All right everyone's just looking at me.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Works for me.

Dara M Wilson:

All right, we are now moving into our mail bag.

Natasha Muse:

All right.

Dara M Wilson:

Let's open up the mail bag, read what our lovely listeners had to say this week.

Yasmine Khan:

From Kristi P.Q., she said, "If you care about yourself listen to this podcast. It's like hanging with girlfriends who are smart, hilarious and motivating, all at the same." Awe.

Dara M Wilson:

Awe.

Yasmine Khan:

That really fills my compliment generosity bag.

Natasha Muse:

Somebody just emailed that to you?

Dara M Wilson:

It was an iTunes review.

Natasha Muse:

Oh it was a review? Oh nice.

Dara M Wilson:

Now it's called Apple Podcast. Wherever, wherever Apple is sending you these days, that's where it is.

Yasmine Khan:

They're killing iTunes I hear.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

I can't tell you how many times I've paid for the same album and just bought it over and over again because iTunes lost it.

Dara M Wilson:

What is ... What the ... ?

Yasmine Khan:

Thieves! Just kidding.

Dara M Wilson:

iTunes lost it? You think iTunes was the one that lost it?

Yasmine Khan:

Mm-hmm (affirmative) absolutely.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh okay.

Yasmine Khan:

They're in the cloud. I mean, I lost my computer, but-

Dara M Wilson:

Which is obviously iTunes fault.

Yasmine Khan:

But they're supposed to hold it for me.

Dara M Wilson:

Uh-huh (affirmative).

Natasha Muse:

There does seem like there's some kind of shenanigans with iTunes.

Dara M Wilson:

Always. That's why I moved over to the Android world.

Natasha Muse:

Wait, you click the wrong thing and then all of sudden they delete your old way of-

Dara M Wilson:

Doing.

Natasha Muse:

Doing things.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Shenanigans. Pure and simple.

Natasha Muse:

They are ... yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

I don't know anything about that mobile iOS life, I do not.

Yasmine Khan:

You're an Android girl.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right I'm an Android girl. And Google reminds me every day, by sending me a joke.

Yasmine Khan:

What's happening?

Dara M Wilson:

It's listening to me. My phone turned on because I said the word Google.

Yasmine Khan:

The Androids are with us.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right. Everyone's listening all the time. That's what we have learned.

Yasmine Khan:

Are you an Android or iOS?

Natasha Muse:

I'm a little bit of both. Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

Tell me more.

Natasha Muse:

I have an iPhone and I also have a Chromebook.

Yasmine Khan:

Oh you're really mixing-

Dara M Wilson:

Throwback.

Yasmine Khan:

Mixing genres.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah, yeah. Mixing what?

Yasmine Khan:

Mixing genres.

Natasha Muse:

Oh genres.

Yasmine Khan:

Genres.

Natasha Muse:

I thought you said mixing jaws.

Dara M Wilson:

What would that look like?

Natasha Muse:

What does that mean? I don't know what that means.

Dara M Wilson:

That's like a remix to the soundtrack of jaws. Mixing.

Yasmine Khan:

(singing). Sounded like a really excited 13 year old boy.

Dara M Wilson:

(singing). I like that.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Mixing jaws. That's great.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Mixing jaws, I have absolutely no way to transition that into our main topic of today.

Yasmine Khan:

Cool.

Dara M Wilson:

Which is, FOMO spending. What is FOMO spending? In case you can't put the two parts together we're going to Sesame Street this. FOMO Spending. FOMO is ...

Yasmine Khan:

Fear of Missing Out.

Dara M Wilson:

F-O-M-O. Now we're all millennials. Yes? Yes.

Yasmine Khan:

Yay.

Dara M Wilson:

Spending means, como se dice "to spend"?

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I wish I was riffing.

Dara M Wilson:

Okay. Was that supportive?

Natasha Muse:

Was that part of the remix?

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah, that was the remix.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah, I thought that's what we were doing here. We're just going to remix the rest- yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

All day.

Natasha Muse:

(singing).

Yasmine Khan:

Done.

Dara M Wilson:

All day, all day, all remixes.

Yasmine Khan:

I couldn't miss out.

Dara M Wilson:

You had a fear.

Yasmine Khan:

I had a fear of missing out on the opportunity to do a callback with you fine ladies.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Yasmine Khan:

That's what it was.

Dara M Wilson:

So to say it plainly. FOMO spending is when you spend money that you really don't feel like you have to spend because you are reluctant to miss out on something that the people around you are doing, or that it seems like people are participating in.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah, as we often talk about on this show a lot of money behaviors not just about dollars and cents, but our emotional holistic whole selves, and on that hierarchy of needs, spending time with people is important. Doing things with your kids is important. Spending time with family. And so sometimes you end up ... it becomes a need. And so it's not this clear black and white thing. But then sometimes it becomes like an anxiety. Especially with that Instagram life and all these things of seeing everyone's world and life every day and every way, and you're like, "Everyone's doing all the things. Like, I wanna be in a lake, drinking a margarita with that cute dog. I'm gonna go find a dog". Step one.

Natasha Muse:

A dog that likes to drink.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

A dog that likes margaritas. Not as easy as you would think. I personally have a dog who does not like alcohol.

Yasmine Khan:

How do you know that?

Dara M Wilson:

I don't know that. Why would I know such a thing?

Natasha Muse:

Dogs like beer, right?

Dara M Wilson:

No. He doesn't like anything that comes ... he likes his drinks low onto the ground. He runs away from bottles and cups of all kinds.

Natasha Muse:

Well you've got to pour the beer into the bowl.

Dara M Wilson:

No, no, no, no, no.

Natasha Muse:

You can't expect him to drink out of the-

Dara M Wilson:

He doesn't like the smell, he doesn't like anything.

Yasmine Khan:

He doesn't deign to drink out of them.

Dara M Wilson:

He doesn't like the smell of anything when people are around and there's alcohol. He's like, "You people. I don't deign to be around people who imbibe." And he runs away. Where are we? What are we talking about? We're talking about dogs drinking margaritas. We are entering the No Judgment Zone.

Yasmine Khan:

No. No. No. No. No. Judgment.

Dara M Wilson:

Zone.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I knew you were gonna bring it.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh. That's me. I brought it.

Yasmine Khan:

That level of enthusiasm.

Dara M Wilson:

I brought it so hard by saying, "Zone".

Dara M Wilson:

That was my remix.

Yasmine Khan:

Thank you.

Dara M Wilson:

Was it good?

Natasha Muse:

(laughs) Was that helping?

Yasmine Khan:

Yes. That's definitely helping. You should do that for 74 more seconds.

Natasha Muse:

No.

Dara M Wilson:

Yes, I love guest participation in this song.

Natasha Muse:

I like how it went from Jaws, to straight up Dolphin. It's a friendly-

Dara M Wilson:

Just losing teeth by the minute.

Natasha Muse:

It's a friendly remix.

Dara M Wilson:

Are dolphins friendly?

Natasha Muse:

I think sometimes they're friendly with each other and then sometimes they're too friendly with each other.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh. That's right.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

They ... they do bad things to each other sometimes.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. They can sometimes, assault each other.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah. Oh. Dolphins, I hope you're listening. Knock it off.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. You gotta flipper the script.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh man.

Yasmine Khan:

Oh. We have a real life comedian with us, guys.

Natasha Muse:

That one's for free.

Natasha Muse:

I'm so awful. I'm so sorry.

Yasmine Khan:

This is the segment where we share our own experiences with this week's topic without judging each other.

Yasmine Khan:

So, Dara told me about your FOMO spending.

Dara M Wilson:

My FOMO spending. We talked a little bit about this before, that sometimes my FOMO spending goes in the other direction. Where I have fear of my friends and family missing out on things. And so, I'm like, "I wanna do this thing!". People be like, "I don't have any money.", I'm like, "It's okay. I happen to have money right now," and then I spend on the thing and then I don't have any money and I think, "Wow. That wasn't a great way to plan for my future, was it? But, I'm sure glad we all had that experience."

Dara M Wilson:

So, that's kinda, usually how it works out and the other direction, I'm tryna think. It's hard 'cause I do spend so much time at home by myself, not desiring to go out and be with other people. What you talked about the Instagram stuff, definitely is hard for me. Probably at least, once or twice a year, I delete Instagram off of my phone 'cause it just makes me feel bad. 'Cause everybody's happy. And I know it's a lie, 'cause it's not like I'm crying on Instagram, but you put your best foot forward, right?

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

But, it's not the truth. So, I don't know.

Yasmine Khan:

Depends on who you follow. I follow a lot of ... I follow an account called the Emotional Cloud. Then there's always pictures of a sad teenager-

Dara M Wilson:

Oh my gosh.

Yasmine Khan:

... with a weird growth. It's always like, kinda-

Dara M Wilson:

With a weird growth?

Yasmine Khan:

With a weird ghost or something that's talking to it or-

Natasha Muse:

What?

Dara M Wilson:

That didn't ... I'm gonna give myself credit here because growth didn't make any sense and then you said ghost and that didn't make sense.

Yasmine Khan:

You're right on both counts.

Dara M Wilson:

Okay.

Natasha Muse:

I'd like to see a talking growth. Like, a real supportive ... "I'm the opposite of cancerous".

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Those are the keepers.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. I'm a keeper mole.

Yasmine Khan:

That's right. "How you doing today?"

Natasha Muse:

Just a little ... are you looking it up now?

Yasmine Khan:

She's looking it up in real time.

Natasha Muse:

Nice.

Dara M Wilson:

Emotional. It's called the-

Natasha Muse:

I follow a Twitter feed called Wholesome Memes.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh.

Natasha Muse:

It just makes you feel good.

Dara M Wilson:

That's nice. I think the last thing I read was that interactive social media can make you feel better 'cause it can replicate social interaction ... real social interaction.

Dara M Wilson:

But, that passive digestion of social media makes you feel badly, which I think is what's happening with my Instagram stuff. 'Cause I'm just scrolling, scrolling, scrolling watching people on the [inaudible] coast, et cetera.

Natasha Muse:

Just feeling like you're always taking somebody else's stuff in without ever having ... like, you feel like you don't have your own voice, in a way.

Dara M Wilson:

Right. 'Cause how many pictures can I take of my television, from the couch? "Here's me again. What I'm doing."

Natasha Muse:

And the first one might get a lot of likes 'cause it's funny.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh yeah and then ever subsequent one, they're like, "Okay. Spice it up.".

Dara M Wilson:

So, don't judge me for only sitting on my couch. Please. Everyone out there.

Yasmine Khan:

Who wanted you.

Dara M Wilson:

What about you, Yasmine? What's your No Judgment Story for this week?

Yasmine Khan:

I would say, a lot of my FOMO also comes from Instagram. Can I also just give you an example.

Yasmine Khan:

I just looked up Emotional Club. It just has random pictures of ... here's a picture of a sign that somebody posted in the office that says, "Please do not lean on me. I am unstable.".

Yasmine Khan:

It's just like random-

Natasha Muse:

She's not gonna show us though.

Dara M Wilson:

She's keeping it to herself.

Yasmine Khan:

I'm showing you guys. I'm showing you guys.

Yasmine Khan:

It's just like random, little things like that.

Dara M Wilson:

That lines and up ... over someway. That lines up with what we were talking about in our episode last week, 'bout being able to lean on people and having people lean on you. Sometimes you can't do that and you have to be honest.

Yasmine Khan:

You have to be-

Dara M Wilson:

And put up a sign in the office that says, "Don't lean on me".

Yasmine Khan:

"Don't lean on me".

Dara M Wilson:

"I'm unstable.".

Natasha Muse:

Is that the new song, "Don't lean on me"?

Dara M Wilson:

"I am unstable."

Yasmine Khan:

"Find me in bed. And I'll be there the rest of the day."

Dara M Wilson:

That's nice.

Natasha Muse:

Nice.

Dara M Wilson:

We trailed off. Natasha and I. No, and then Yasmine picked it up with some actually words. Look at you.

Yasmine Khan:

I think I might've lost the beat, but it's cool.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Anyways, you're avoiding telling us your No Judgment story. So, please-

Yasmine Khan:

I wasn't stalling at all.

Yasmine Khan:

And my No Judgment Story is ... So, on Instagram, I really slowed down on doing stand up comedy. I love, love doing it, but with work and with podcasting, other things in my life, trying to make a human with my body and friends. I have just stopped doing comedy and I'll see groups of comedians that I know from other parts ... like, other different shows and I'll see that they all know each other now and maybe they always did, but I just get major FOMO of, "Oh. I didn't know you knew her", and they're all together and now they're on a road trip and they're doing shows across the country and I'm like, "Oh. Why?"

Dara M Wilson:

Does that translate into you spending money that you shouldn't spend?

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. It translates into me mostly spending energy that I don't have. To get up and go out and try to do more things. And yeah, sometimes, the money I spend is to go to shows. To get out and we went to Cluster Fest last week, which she's making a face because we thought it was gonna be worth it and it wasn't. It was mostly us standing in line.

Natasha Muse:

I heard about that.

Yasmine Khan:

It was really expensive to stand in line.

Dara M Wilson:

It's really expensive to stand in line.

Natasha Muse:

Stuff like that, I wanna make a joke or something, but I feel like you're really feeling it right now.

Yasmine Khan:

No, actually, I've been waiting for jokes. If you made a joke, I'd be like, "Yay. Money. Cha Ching. Worth it.". I got my money's worth, if I can at least make jokes about it.

Natasha Muse:

What's weird that you spend money to avoid FOMO and you actually spent money to get more FOMO.

Yasmine Khan:

Yes. Exactly.

Dara M Wilson:

Wow. That's true. That's all it was. It was FOMO spending to get more FOMO. Standing outside-

Yasmine Khan:

That's all it was.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Stand in line and everyone and there's laughing. Without me.

Dara M Wilson:

Why not me?

Yasmine Khan:

Don't have fun without me, guys.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah. The only acts that we could hear were on the outside stage where people were being super racists.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

On stage?

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. People were laughing about it. It was-

Natasha Muse:

Oh no.

Dara M Wilson:

It was rough. It was a rough ... it was a rough go.

Yasmine Khan:

It was a rough go.

Dara M Wilson:

That's British.

Natasha Muse:

I didn't see anything about that on Twitter.

Dara M Wilson:

Usually people complain about-

Yasmine Khan:

I Instagramed about it and I got yelled at. Somebody was like, "If you get offended by comedy, just leave." And I was like, "No thanks".

Yasmine Khan:

I'm a comedian. I make an effort to make it funny without making cheap shots at people. I think everyone in this room does that. And so, it's very disappointing when people just go for the cheap shots.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Natasha Muse:

Very lazy.

Yasmine Khan:

It's lazy.

Dara M Wilson:

It's very lazy.

Natasha Muse:

You need to invest in getting better.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Yasmine Khan:

Yes. [crosstalk 00:17:03]. Yes.

Dara M Wilson:

That's a money word, invest. Invest in getting better.

Yasmine Khan:

Returns. Dividends. Cha Ching.

Dara M Wilson:

Cha Ching is also a money word.

Dara M Wilson:

Natasha, what about you? What's your FOMO spending story that we will not judge you for?

Natasha Muse:

So, I've been tryna think about this. I feel like, last time I can remember thinking I was gonna spend a lot of money for no reason is when I needed a new phone. There was this new thing, that of course, you go online and you're like, "What are the best phones this year?", and there's this one that has the glass going all the way to the edge. I think it was like an Android, right? And I was all excited. I was like, "I'm gonna get this.", I was like, "It's only a thousand something dollars."

Yasmine Khan:

No biggie.

Natasha Muse:

And I was like, "This is a pretty good deal though. The thing ... ", and I was telling my wife about it. I was like, "But if you look at the reports, it's actually gonna pretty, pretty good. The cameras will be pretty good.". She's like, "And why do you need that?". I was like, "'Cause it's gonna be really good. It's good. It goes all the way to the edge.". And I felt like Spinal Tap, but it goes through like, 11.

Dara M Wilson:

Yes.

Natasha Muse:

This is extra. I need extra screen.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

So, I ended up getting a ... what? A 5s?

Yasmine Khan:

Is that the iPhone?

Natasha Muse:

It's an apple phone that was already old at the time. It was like two years old. I go a new phone-

Yasmine Khan:

So, you got talked out of it?

Natasha Muse:

I got talked out of it.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh.

Natasha Muse:

It wasn't like I got talked out of it, it was more like somebody ... like, I was in the dark just feeling around with my hands, thinking, "I'm onto something", and my wife just turned the light on. And she was just like, "No. See what you're doing, idiot?". I was like, "Oh I get it now. I got it. I don't need to be on my phone more. I don't need to spend twice as much money as I need to to just have a little slightly more".

Dara M Wilson:

Slightly more screen?

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Slightly more screen. Just more reason to be on the phone, when I already am on it enough. Feeling bad about things that are not happening, like you were saying.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

When you get on there and it's not so much what people have, but it's what they're doing.

Yasmine Khan:

Right.

Natasha Muse:

You get really invested.

Yasmine Khan:

Taking away from the world.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

It's hard.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

Then you're like, "But everyone has one. It looks so pretty and I want it. I want my infinity screen."

Natasha Muse:

That's what it's called.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Is it?

Natasha Muse:

I banished it from my head. Isn't it an infinity screen?

Yasmine Khan:

No, I was thinking about an infinity pool.

Dara M Wilson:

No. She's thinking of an infinity pool.

Yasmine Khan:

You know how infinity pools go to the very edge?

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I brought it. I was on broad.

Yasmine Khan:

I appreciate it.

Natasha Muse:

That's can one thing I can afford to buy ... is your lies.

Yasmine Khan:

Was it a lie? It was just a mis-whatever.

Natasha Muse:

It was something that you were wrong about, but you thought was true.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

Intention matters. I think it just makes it a dumb thing I said.

Natasha Muse:

I believed it.

Yasmine Khan:

Okay.

Natasha Muse:

But, I thought ... I still brought it.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You did.

Dara M Wilson:

All right, again, still, talking about FOMO spending, but let's dig in a little deeper into this week's topic.

Yasmine Khan:

According to a Credit Karma study, 40% of millennials have spent beyond their means and racked up debt in order to keep up with their friends' spending. Which ... Okay, I'm on the cusp of not being a Millennial, or being one. And I also-

Natasha Muse:

Are you going to age out soon?

Yasmine Khan:

I'm thinking I might ... yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

You don't age out.

Yasmine Khan:

I'm on the edge. I was born in '81. So, I'm like-

Natasha Muse:

When people talk about it, it's like Menudo, when you can kind of get too old to be one.

Dara M Wilson:

Because people do use it as a shorthand for the angry youth.

Natasha Muse:

The youth.

Dara M Wilson:

The Youths. But, that's not the truth.

Yasmine Khan:

No. I was just born ... I'm born on the cusp of ... some definition's I'm in. Some definitions I'm out.

Yasmine Khan:

And I will say this, and I will be very nice of like, I kinda have more JOMO, I think. The Joy of Missing Out. Like, when somebody-

Natasha Muse:

I've never heard of JOMO before.

Yasmine Khan:

So, you make plans with somebody and it's like an hour before and you're sitting on your couch and you're like, "I gotta get up and wash my face and put some pants on.", and then they text you and they're like, "Oh sorry I'm making an excuse so we can both get out of this," and you're like, "You're the best person in the world. You understand me so well. I love you. Let's get married.", and just sit on our couches.

Natasha Muse:

And I canceled the marriage the day of. Just be like, "No. I know I got the cake and everything, but I'm just super tired."

Dara M Wilson:

And we're not gonna get that money back, right? So, we might as well just do what we want to do.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Sit at home, eat that cake with your hands. Who cares? Nobody's looking.

Dara M Wilson:

I will say that on the FOMO tip, 'cause I am a Millennial, and I think that's what the children are saying, that brunch is a big part of this for me and the people in my life. Not so much anymore because, truly, I have developed this love affair with my couch and get very intense anxiety. So, I don't have the desire to go out and do stuff like that anymore. But, in years pasted, I was always, "Let's just go to brunch and get bottomless mimosas and we gonna have so much fun and we're gonna chill and then we're gonna chat and then we're gonna sit out", and it is so expensive for no reason.

Yasmine Khan:

It's so expensive.

Dara M Wilson:

You're just drinking like-

Yasmine Khan:

Rent.

Dara M Wilson:

Rent with a hint of bubbles in it. Like, it's such a waste of money. And you're like, "Well, if y'all would just come over to my house and brought three bottles of cheap champagne, we would be able to do this and have so much more fun.", which is, I think that's how I dealt with my FOMO. I just tried to bring as many people into the home life, as possible. That's what I encouraged them to do.

Yasmine Khan:

I think that's true. I'll add on to that from our facts bag.

Yasmine Khan:

A lot of FOMO spending by millennials comes from going out and spending on food and drink. So 2/3rds felt regret about spending more than they intended to on going out with friends.

Yasmine Khan:

What do you think about that, Natasha? Is that an experience you share?

Natasha Muse:

No. No.

Yasmine Khan:

Tell me more about that.

Natasha Muse:

I enjoy staying in. I enjoy buying drinks for people and having them come over.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

But, I don't invite people over anymore 'cause I got children. So, we just hang. I do comedy at night and I get free drinks. So, that's what I like.

Yasmine Khan:

Free drinks are-

Dara M Wilson:

That is why most people do comedy.

Natasha Muse:

I'm tryna remember what it ... I feel like ... We use to dress up and have fun, but then go to dive bars. That was fun. I don't know. I'm tryna key in what part of my life I feel like exploring. Because it's been all those different levels where I'm wondering, though, if back in the day, I had Twitter and social media to like contend with. If I would be more into trying to go to this nicer places.

Dara M Wilson:

Because it's so much more in your face?

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Just like, "These people are doing this. Maybe I should be doing this way. Maybe we shouldn't be so low rent on everything.".

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah, but when I was in college and I didn't have any social media. That stuff just didn't exist. So, I didn't know. So, I was blissfully unaware. It was just like, "What's in my neighborhood that I could hear happening?".

Natasha Muse:

Right.

Yasmine Khan:

That could probably give me some FOMO.

Dara M Wilson:

Physically hear happening.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I agree. It's probably some phenomena of the times.

Dara M Wilson:

Phenomena.

Natasha Muse:

But, it is fun to like ... what do you like about? Is it drinking? Or like ... is it about being with your friends? Or is it because you need to drink when you're with your friends? Or ...

Dara M Wilson:

Actually, another fact in our fact bag, addresses just that. You teed us right up for it. Some of the reason that, in this same setting millennials get for FOMO spending are, not wanting to be left out of future activities. No wanting to feel left out, of course and not wanting to lost their friends and no wanting to be judged.

Dara M Wilson:

I think, in my personal experience, all of those things come into it. The not wanting to be left out of future activities, is actually a huge part of that. 'Cause that happens and it's not fair. It's not nice or cool, but a certain point ... people stop asking you if you wanna do things 'cause you'll always say no.

Natasha Muse:

Right. That reminds me of when I tried to move to Los Angeles, before I started doing comedy, and I did not have a car. And, I have met some people at a bar, that I'd taken a bus to and they were like, "You should come to such and such place sometime.", and I'm like, "Oh. Cool. Does the bus go there?", and they were like, "Nevermind.".

Natasha Muse:

I've never felt like the cool wall of ice to stand between me and other person-

Dara M Wilson:

So quickly. Were they like, "Oh-

Natasha Muse:

Was like, "Should I buy a car to have friends?".

Yasmine Khan:

In L.A.? You kinda? Right?

Natasha Muse:

It seems like it, but I can get to places on the bus. No one takes the bus. They're pretty empty.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. That's true.

Yasmine Khan:

And it's also kinda really spread out in L.A.. So, it's not like somebody's like, "Oh. I'll just pick you up on my way.",'cause ...

Natasha Muse:

I mean, if it hadn't happened that night, it would of happened sooner or later.

Dara M Wilson:

Right.

Natasha Muse:

And I only stayed there for three months 'cause it was not for me.

Dara M Wilson:

It was not the right move for you.

Natasha Muse:

No it was not. I moved there just 'cause I thought it would be cheaper to live down there. But, not because I liked it.

Yasmine Khan:

I'm from Southern California and I will never move back because I can't spend that much of my day in a car.

Natasha Muse:

Seems like a lot.

Yasmine Khan:

It's a lot 'cause you actually have to drive every single place. And there's a lot happening that you're like, "I wanna do this. I wanna do that.", then it's just expensive because gas is expensive then your life is just on the freeway. That's no kinda life.

Dara M Wilson:

That's no kinda life.

Yasmine Khan:

That's no kinda life.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah, I'm on the-

Yasmine Khan:

A lot of people excluding you from things.

Dara M Wilson:

Right. I'm on that walking to work life, right now. It's really messing things up for me.

Yasmine Khan:

Really?

Dara M Wilson:

I mean, I had plans to maybe not live here forever and go other places, such as Los Angeles. And, but I keep thinking like, "Quality of Life wise though. Is it gonna get better then this? Walking 20 minutes to work?"

Yasmine Khan:

No. It's the best. I walk to work too.

Dara M Wilson:

What?

Yasmine Khan:

And it's amazing.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

It's like the best part of my day.

Dara M Wilson:

Best part of my day is still sitting on that couch, but I understand what you're saying.

Natasha Muse:

What's the best moment? Is it like right before you sit down? Or like, right after you sit down?

Dara M Wilson:

It's right after I sit down-

Natasha Muse:

Okay. So, it's like the completion of the ... okay.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right. And then, I call the dog and he comes up and lays next to me and I put ... I pick up, now, my knitting needles, 'cause I've been knitting and trying not to be on my phone so much.

Natasha Muse:

Oh. That's good.

Dara M Wilson:

So, I'm not looking at a screen. Except for the t.v. screen, which I am looking at and put on whatever thing I'm watching at the time. Right now, it's a Netflix series called, 'Dark', which is really amazing and Eastern European and about time traveling, kind of. It's good. You'll like it. Take it ... Take it from me, a professional t.v. watcher. And yeah, that's like my very happy, comfy place.

Natasha Muse:

All right.

Dara M Wilson:

I'm knitting a scarf that I think belongs to Yasmine, I think she called dibs on it, so.

Yasmine Khan:

I did. In one of the past episodes I did call dibs on it.

Dara M Wilson:

And if you're following along, you can see just how slowly I knit. 'Cause I'm still working on it.

Yasmine Khan:

And as it happen.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Yasmine Khan:

Natasha, you have kids, right?

Natasha Muse:

I do.

Yasmine Khan:

How old are your kids?

Natasha Muse:

They're seven and five.

Yasmine Khan:

So, they're probably gonna be of this generation that is living in and around and emendate with the social medias.

Natasha Muse:

They sure might be. My oldest is already asking for a phone.

Yasmine Khan:

What are you telling him?

Natasha Muse:

I'm telling him, "No". They're gonna be one of the last people, I think, in their generation, or their age group maybe, I don't know. We'll see how it goes. Tryna give them a little bit of screens, here and there, so they know how to navigate them.

Yasmine Khan:

But, then like, take it away real fast?

Natasha Muse:

I do. I just slap it out of their hands.

Yasmine Khan:

I hear that's the best way to parent these days. Slap the screen away.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Then they associate the stinging in their hands with whatever they were watching last.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I hear that's really effective.

Dara M Wilson:

We could all use some of that, to be honest.

Yasmine Khan:

I agree. Well-

Natasha Muse:

And their friends have the run of their parents phones, sometimes, and they want that with my phone and that is not a ... that's not how I, but their friends would just watch YouTube. Just YouTube.

Yasmine Khan:

Mommy's phone is N-S-F-K.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Not Safe For Kids.

Natasha Muse:

Right. No I get it. Yeah, I get initialism and what not.

Yasmine Khan:

I had it say it out loud too 'cause I wasn't sure if I did it right.

Natasha Muse:

N-S-F-K does sound like a radio station.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

Like a dyslexic one or something.

Dara M Wilson:

Or it's ... I don't know if we can say it-

Yasmine Khan:

If it's backwards?

Natasha Muse:

What? Huh? Hmm?

Dara M Wilson:

I was gonna say it was porn-y, but that's because I was thinking of N-S-F-W.

Yasmine Khan:

That's 'cause that's what the riff was on full circle.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah. Yeah. I'm back.

Natasha Muse:

I mean, also, I wouldn't want them to see porn.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

And that is great parenting and let me be the first to commend you for that.

Yasmine Khan:

Slap the porn away. Slap the porn away. Just slap. Go. No more porn.

Natasha Muse:

Well, there's this weird meme, that my kids have gotten from school. Where they lay down, like prone on the ground, with their kinda head propped up, like this. Like one leg up and they call that Doing Sexy?

Natasha Muse:

I'm just like, "What is-"

Yasmine Khan:

Whoa.

Dara M Wilson:

Wow.

Yasmine Khan:

Okay. So-

Natasha Muse:

I'm was like, "What does sexy mean to you? This is sexy?", and they just do the pose. I'm like, "Okay. Does that have any other connections or-"

Yasmine Khan:

No. I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it at all.

Natasha Muse:

It's very ... it makes you very squiggly, kinda.

Yasmine Khan:

It reminds me of an '80s ad for anything.

Dara M Wilson:

Jeans and Pepsi.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Jeans. Jeans and Pepsi.

Natasha Muse:

For the '80s. [crosstalk]

Dara M Wilson:

And after the '80s.

Yasmine Khan:

Another risk of all this inner webs for us youth, is that 39% of Millennials, which and I don't know what your kids would fall into 'cause they're [inaudible 00:30:51], anyway.

Natasha Muse:

They're postpatizers.

Dara M Wilson:

They're postpatizers.

Yasmine Khan:

39% of the youth, since we decided that's a proxy, have gone into debt to keep up with their friends and 73% of them say they keep it a secret from the friends.

Yasmine Khan:

So, they're getting into debt to keep up with each other and they're not talking about it.

Natasha Muse:

Oh my God. That's like if me and all my friends were addicted to cocaine but none of us talked about it.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

It's my turn in the bathroom.

Yasmine Khan:

I ... I am-

Natasha Muse:

We have all secret problems that nobody wants to talk about. Who's gonna do the intervention?

Yasmine Khan:

I'm a very like ...

Dara M Wilson:

I have no been around of sex, drugs and rock and roll, in my life. There was a single instance where I was a party and somebody was going in and out of the bathroom with their boyfriend.

Natasha Muse:

I thought the in and out was part of the sex.

Dara M Wilson:

With their boyfriend and I was like, "I mean, how many times can you do it in one night? Geez.", and then somebody was like, "Dara, they're doing drugs.", and I was like, "Oh.Okay.".

Natasha Muse:

But still, how many times can you do it?

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Also.

Dara M Wilson:

I guess we could just ... yeah. I was very confused, but now I know all about the things. No, that's still all I know.

Yasmine Khan:

Fear Of Missing Out.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right.

Yasmine Khan:

On the bathroom trip. I don't have that fear, yeah.

Natasha Muse:

So, that's so sexy. Everyone's comparing themselves, what they see on the outside, to what they know is happening in their interior life. As far as finances.

Dara M Wilson:

That's right. But, if everybody just told the truth, we would know that we're all in debt, we all need to stay at home and knit with our dogs, that we can't afford to have.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I think the powers that be benefit when we're all too ashamed to talk about the direst that we're under.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

I think that's true and now, oh I'm excited to hear this song from Yasmine. It is time for our ...

Yasmine Khan:

Action. Action Item.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh my god.

Natasha Muse:

Was it suppose to sound like something?

Natasha Muse:

Okay.

Yasmine Khan:

No. We usually kinda give it a little jingle, impromptu and I just lost the jingle. My head was, "Oh swear.".

Dara M Wilson:

That's what ... No, Phil's gonna make it work.

Yasmine Khan:

Okay.

Dara M Wilson:

Our producer's gonna come in there and he's gonna juzz it up a little bit and it's gonna be beautiful.

Yasmine Khan:

Action. Action Item.

Yasmine Khan:

Or he's gonna be like, "Hey, Can you come in on Friday so we can rerecord?"

Dara M Wilson:

No. I'm putting my foot down. That goes out, as is.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. I feel like that leaked out of me, like a slow gas. Like a-

Dara M Wilson:

Oh. Gosh. That's the most attractive thing you've said all day.

Yasmine Khan:

This room is poisonous.

Natasha Muse:

Like the dolphin that didn't say yes.

Dara M Wilson:

That's my favorite children's book. The Dolphin that Didn't Say Yes. Teaching some real hard lessons about marine life in that one.

Natasha Muse:

Consent of the Sea.

Dara M Wilson:

You've heard of Chicken of the Sea, now we bring you ... anyway.

Dara M Wilson:

Each week we give you a simple thing you can do, right away, to get better at money and this week, you're Action Item is to be honest with your friends and instead of wearing a coat of desperation, shout out to Sharon Wilson. I said my mom's name. Offer up ideas of things you can do for free.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

So, some ideas from our lives. I already mentioned kinda like, these big pot luck, picnic things that I do from time to time. I love that. And that means that everybody can bring what they can afford to bring. Which is nice.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

What else?

Yasmine Khan:

Free Comedy Nights.

Natasha Muse:

Free Comedy Nights?

Yasmine Khan:

Out here in The Bay, we have a great big park that's a fun, like Deloris Park or other ... around the lake, there's people just hanging out for free. What do you-

Natasha Muse:

And, well, to quote one of my favorite songs, "Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card.".

Yasmine Khan:

Hey.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Is that Arthur?

Natasha Muse:

Yes. Arthur.

Dara M Wilson:

Yes. I got it.

Yasmine Khan:

Between you having kids and Dara watching kid shows, there's a lot you guys have in common.

Natasha Muse:

I think I actually knew that song from before I had kids, in fairness.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah. Thank you very much.

Dara M Wilson:

First of all, it's a Ziggy Marley song. It's a legit song. He's a Marley. Do you know Marleys?

Yasmine Khan:

I do. I know of the Marleys.

Dara M Wilson:

And it's on P-B-S and you could listen to it for free. So ...

Yasmine Khan:

Oh yeah. Shame me. I deserve ... I deserve all the music shame.

Natasha Muse:

That's double.

Natasha Muse:

But I enjoy going to The Library because sometimes I get the urge to go shopping and you can just go to the library and walk out with a bunch of free stuff.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

That's so true.

Yasmine Khan:

It scratches that forging itch.

Natasha Muse:

You gotta bring it back, but you know ... ?

Dara M Wilson:

But, it does scratch that itch.

Yasmine Khan:

Forging itch.

Natasha Muse:

It kinda does.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah. Gosh. That big stack of books. Like, the excitement that comes from-

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

That's a great suggestion.

Yasmine Khan:

Selecting and like, "Keep. No. Keep. No. This is a good one.". Something ... yeah, my brain loves that.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Make sure you set a reminder to renew in three weeks. 'Cause ten cents a book a day, kinda adds up fast.

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah, I haven't gone to a library in a long time because I'm pretty sure I have a fine out there, somewhere and at this point, I'm just afraid to know what it is. Which is not a good example to be sending out on this podcast. I should confront that fear, and I will eventually.

Dara M Wilson:

Those are some of the things, you know, always, you can tweet us, let us know. What are your things you like to do for free, or that you would suggest you should do with your friends. We're at Money Ha Ha Pod on Twitter or on Instagram. Mention us there too.

Dara M Wilson:

Now it is time for ...

Yasmine Khan:

Another song?

Dara M Wilson:

Another song.

Yasmine Khan:

Dara does this one.

Dara M Wilson:

I do. Do I do this one?

Dara M Wilson:

Here, we go. Ready? Is everybody ready? I see everybody's on the edge of their seats. All right. This is all apart of song. All right the song is, It was Worth It. Repeat after me. It. Was. Worth It. Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

It was worth it.

Yasmine Khan:

It's a segment where each of us share something we spent money on in the past week, that we actually feel was worth the money.

Dara M Wilson:

And Yasmine, I think you're up first this week. What is your It Was Worth It for the week?

Natasha Muse:

Does groceries count? Or ...

Dara M Wilson:

Yeah. Tell me about your groceries.

Natasha Muse:

I mean, is worth it to ... for my children.

Yasmine Khan:

If they're worth it, then I guess.

Natasha Muse:

They do stop complain ... Actually, I don't know if it is worth it 'cause half the time I make them breakfast and they're like, "We want candy breakfast.", 'Cause Candy Breakfast is this one thing I did one time after Halloween, where I just wanted to get rid of all their candy. So, I was like, "Just eat as much as you can.". Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh. Any everyday since.

Natasha Muse:

They remember that day very well.

Yasmine Khan:

It's seared.

Natasha Muse:

They wish to repeat it. And I make food like a jerk.

Dara M Wilson:

You're like, "I'm tryna keep you alive.". I think that's a fine one. That's a fine one. Groceries are a good one.

Yasmine Khan:

Groceries are always worth it.

Natasha Muse:

[crosstalk] about something more interesting than that. I've got a life.

Dara M Wilson:

I live a full life.

Yasmine Khan:

What did I get this week? Oh. I know what I got. Mine's always food. It's just always a little extra snack that I wanted. I was in Arizona for a conference and I ... Arizona is known for their good meats. And I got some special beef jerky, like two bags of it.

Dara M Wilson:

What makes it special?

Yasmine Khan:

It was local and delicious and expensive.

Dara M Wilson:

And you brought some back for us too? That was so nice of you.

Yasmine Khan:

No, I ate it all on the airplane.

Dara M Wilson:

Oh okay. That's interesting. You said something different than what I said.

Yasmine Khan:

I did. I did say something different.

Natasha Muse:

Arizona's known for their meat?

Yasmine Khan:

I think so.

Natasha Muse:

Okay.

Yasmine Khan:

I don't know. It seems like everywhere I went, they were like bragging about their great steaks and this and that.

Dara M Wilson:

She did say that and we left it unchallenged and I'm glad that you brought it back 'cause-

Natasha Muse:

Are you sure they weren't just saying, "They're great state"? Mm. I like steak. No state.

Dara M Wilson:

She's already gone. She's like at the meats store.

Yasmine Khan:

My head was already there and I was like, "That's where I am.". I want all the meats in my mouth. I love them.

Dara M Wilson:

Okay.

Natasha Muse:

Succulent.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah. Succulent.

Natasha Muse:

Yeah. Right.

Yasmine Khan:

Steaks.

Natasha Muse:

They were saying Succulents though.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Natasha Muse:

You just heard what you wanted to hear.

Yasmine Khan:

Like the little pokey plants that are robust? Yeah. Maybe, that might've been it.

Yasmine Khan:

Dara, what was your It Was Worth It?

Dara M Wilson:

Mine, for this week, I know I have been talking a lot about television, get ready, here's more. I purchased, 'cause it's the only way I think you can get it, the first season of a show called Happy Endings.

Dara M Wilson:

It's older show, but it so funny and it has so many jokes per minute. It's amazing. When you laugh, you have to pause to get your laugh out because if you keep laughing you're gonna miss the next three jokes that happen in the next :45 seconds. So great.

Yasmine Khan:

Sounds stressful.

Dara M Wilson:

No. I don't know. This is also like a black people thing where you laugh at something and you have to move. Like, you laugh and you have to run away. You're like, "Ah ha ha", and you walk around the room and then you come back. So, it kind of was like that.

Natasha Muse:

The jokes are that good though?

Dara M Wilson:

Yes.

Natasha Muse:

'Cause that doesn't happen every time you laugh.

Dara M Wilson:

No. But it happens more than you would think in this series.

Natasha Muse:

Okay. That's great.

Dara M Wilson:

You definitely have to get into the rhythm of it 'cause it is so fast, but I love it so much and it was definitely worth it. Anyway.

Dara M Wilson:

All right that was it for our ... Wow.

Yasmine Khan:

What? Sorry.

Dara M Wilson:

Words. Me.

Yasmine Khan:

You do.

Dara M Wilson:

I know, I can't say words.

Yasmine Khan:

Thank you, Natasha, for being here today.

Natasha Muse:

You're welcome. Thanks so much.

Yasmine Khan:

Yeah.

Dara M Wilson:

Where can people find you? Any plugs you have?
